A close on black history month

I have filled my tiktok feed with black content creators. Some of them are autistic like me & understand the intersectionality that plays into black culture. It's challenging to fit it to culture when mental health is something that is often shyed away from in conversation. It's also something I have to deal with as a queer person too. I'm following a content creator who has a stutter & creates historical tellings of black women who have shaped culture, like Bessie Coleman. I love that she doesn't let speaking differently change her goals & quality of content.

I am trying to engage my children in black & brown culture, so they have something to connect with. I want them to have the chance to envision themselves by seeing stories with people who share their background. My toddler has been enjoying Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur on Disney because it demonstrates black culture in a positive, realistic light. The music is funky & the visuals are colorful & in depth.

My older two children learn about black history in school as well as at home. But I often tell them history about Latin, Native, & Asian people in America who have shaped history & demonstrated what their culture means to them. I've always had to be on the offense when it comes to learning about African American history, but I want my family to have it better integrated into their lives. So Happy Leap Day & Happy Black History month to everyone who believes in equal rights & civil liberties.
